The Story of Suwanee
Suwanee traces its origins to the 1830s when the area was part of Cherokee territory ceded through treaties with the U.S. government. The town was formally established in 1837 as a stop along the Atlanta & Richmond Air-Line Railway. The name Suwanee is believed to derive from a Cherokee word, though its exact meaning is debated — some historians link it to the Suwannee River in Florida, while others trace it to a Cherokee term for the area.
For over a century, Suwanee remained a quiet, rural railroad community. That changed dramatically in the late 20th century as Gwinnett County's explosive growth transformed the area. The city's visionary investment in its Town Center — a mixed-use development with a performance stage, splash pad, public art, and green space — earned national recognition and made Suwanee a model for suburban community building.
