The City Too Busy to Hate — Capital of the New South
"A railroad terminus carved from the Georgia wilderness that rose, burned, rose again — and never stopped rising."
History & Heritage
The Story of Atlanta & Buckhead
Atlanta's origin story is unlike any other American city. It was not founded on a river, harbor, or existing settlement — it was created by a railroad stake driven into the Georgia Piedmont. In 1837, a surveyor named Stephen Long drove a zero-milepost marker into the ground to mark the terminus of the Western & Atlantic Railroad, and a settlement called simply "Terminus" grew around it. The town was renamed Marthasville in 1843 and then Atlanta in 1847 — a feminized form of "Atlantic," honoring the railroad that gave it life. By the eve of the Civil War, Atlanta had grown into a critical rail junction connecting four major lines, making it the logistical heart of the Confederacy.
That strategic importance made Atlanta the target of General William T. Sherman's 1864 campaign. After months of fighting through northwest Georgia, Union forces besieged and captured the city in September 1864. Sherman ordered Atlanta's military infrastructure destroyed, and the resulting fires consumed much of the city. Atlanta's postwar recovery was remarkably swift — journalist Henry Grady championed the "New South" vision from Atlanta, and the city rebuilt as a commercial and rail hub that would eventually outgrow every other city in the Southeast.
In the 20th century, Atlanta became the cradle of the American Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on Auburn Avenue in 1929, preached at Ebenezer Baptist Church, and led the movement from Atlanta alongside a generation of leaders who transformed the nation. The city's Black colleges — Morehouse, Spelman, Clark Atlanta, and Morris Brown — produced generations of leaders. Atlanta elected its first Black mayor, Maynard Jackson, in 1973, and has remained a center of African American political, economic, and cultural power ever since.
Buckhead — the upscale district in northwest Atlanta — has its own distinct history. According to local legend, the area got its name in 1838 when a hunter mounted a large buck's head on a post near a tavern at the intersection of what are now Peachtree, Roswell, and West Paces Ferry roads. By the early 20th century, Buckhead had become Atlanta's wealthiest residential enclave, with grand estates lining Habersham Road, Tuxedo Road, and West Paces Ferry. The opening of Lenox Square in 1959 and Phipps Plaza in 1969 established Buckhead as the premier shopping destination in the Southeast. Today, Buckhead is home to the Governor's Mansion, the Atlanta History Center, some of the city's finest restaurants, and a concentration of luxury high-rises and estates that make it one of the most affluent urban neighborhoods in the United States.
