History & Heritage
The Story of Stone Mountain
The village of Stone Mountain was incorporated in 1839, though human habitation around the massive granite monadnock stretches back thousands of years to Native American peoples who regarded the mountain as a sacred site. Early European settlers were drawn to the area's granite quarries, and by the mid-1800s, Stone Mountain granite was being shipped across the country — including for the locks of the Panama Canal and the steps of the U.S. Capitol.
The mountain itself — rising 825 feet above the surrounding plain — features the world's largest high-relief sculpture: a carving of Confederate leaders Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson that covers three acres of the mountain's north face. The carving was begun in 1916 and not completed until 1972. The surrounding Stone Mountain Park, operated by the state, has become one of Georgia's most visited attractions. The village at the mountain's base retains its small-town charm with antique shops, restaurants, and a historic Main Street connected to the park by a pedestrian trail.
