The Story of Conyers
Conyers was established in 1854 as a station along the Georgia Railroad, named for Dr. W.D. Conyers, a local physician who donated land for the rail depot. The town became the seat of Rockdale County when it was carved from Henry and Newton counties in 1870. Like much of Georgia, Conyers' early economy was built on agriculture, particularly cotton farming.
Conyers gained international prominence in 1996 when the Georgia International Horse Park was built just outside the city to host equestrian and mountain biking events for the Atlanta Olympic Games. The facility put Conyers on the world stage and remains a premier equestrian venue. The city's charming Olde Town district has been revitalized in recent years, blending Conyers' railroad heritage with new restaurants, shops, and community spaces. The Monastery of the Holy Spirit, a Trappist monastery founded in 1944 just south of the city, is one of Georgia's most unique spiritual landmarks.
