History & Heritage
The Story of Lithonia
Lithonia was incorporated in 1856 and takes its name from the Greek word "lithonia," meaning "city of stone" — a fitting title for a town built atop one of the richest granite deposits in the southeastern United States. The Arabia Mountain granite belt runs directly through the area, and by the late 1800s, Lithonia's quarries were producing enormous quantities of building stone shipped by rail across the country.
The town grew up along the Georgia Railroad as a center for the granite industry, and many of its original buildings were constructed from locally quarried stone. As the quarrying industry declined in the 20th century, Lithonia transitioned into a residential community within the growing eastern DeKalb corridor. Today, the area's granite heritage is preserved at the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, a federally designated landscape of exposed rock outcrops, rare plant communities, and historic quarry sites that draws hikers and nature lovers from across the region.
