The Story of Douglasville
Douglasville was incorporated in 1875 as the county seat of Douglas County, both named for U.S. Senator Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois, the famed rival of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln-Douglas debates. The town's founding coincided with the arrival of the Georgia Pacific Railroad, and Douglasville grew up around its depot as a center for commerce and agriculture.
For most of the 20th century, Douglasville was a quiet, rural courthouse town at the western edge of metro Atlanta. The construction of I-20 connected it to Atlanta and Birmingham and gradually drew residential and commercial development westward. Since the 1990s, Douglas County has been one of the fastest-growing counties in Georgia, and Douglasville has evolved from a small town into a thriving suburban city while its historic downtown continues to serve as the community's civic heart.
