The Story of McDonough
McDonough was established in 1823 as the county seat of Henry County, both named in honor of Commodore Thomas McDonough, the naval hero who won the Battle of Lake Champlain during the War of 1812. The town grew up around its central courthouse square in the classic Georgia pattern — a civic center surrounded by commerce, churches, and residences.
During the Civil War, Union forces under General Sherman passed through McDonough on the March to the Sea in November 1864. The town survived largely intact and rebuilt its agricultural economy in the decades that followed. McDonough earned its nickname as the "Geranium City" thanks to the vibrant red geraniums that have lined the downtown square each spring for generations. In recent decades, Henry County has been one of Georgia's fastest-growing counties, transforming McDonough from a quiet courthouse town into a thriving suburban hub while preserving its historic square.
