History & Heritage
The Story of Dunwoody
Dunwoody's history stretches back to the early 1830s when settlers began farming the area following Cherokee removal. The community is named for Major Charles Dunwody (the extra 'o' was added later by postal authorities). A small crossroads community grew around a general store and a Methodist campground. The area remained rural farmland well into the 20th century.
Everything changed in the 1970s and 1980s when the construction of I-285 and the development of Perimeter Center transformed Dunwoody from farmland into one of the Southeast's largest office and retail districts. Perimeter Mall opened in 1971, and corporate towers followed rapidly. After decades as unincorporated DeKalb County, residents voted to incorporate in 2008, gaining control of local services and development decisions. Today, Dunwoody balances its role as a major employment center with the preservation of its older residential neighborhoods and the expansion of parks and trails.
