History & Heritage
The Story of Roswell
Roswell was founded in 1839 by Roswell King, a Connecticut entrepreneur who traveled to north Georgia in search of a suitable site for a cotton mill. Impressed by the power of Vickery Creek, King established the Roswell Manufacturing Company and built a planned community around it — complete with workers' housing, a church, and grand homes for the mill's investors. The town was formally incorporated in 1854.
During the Civil War, Union forces occupied Roswell in July 1864 and discovered that the mill was producing cloth for Confederate uniforms. Sherman ordered the mills burned and, in one of the war's most controversial episodes, had approximately 400 mill workers — mostly women — arrested and shipped north as prisoners. Many never returned. Today, Roswell preserves more antebellum homes than almost any city its size in Georgia, and its historic Canton Street district has become one of metro Atlanta's most celebrated dining destinations.

Bulloch Hall
An 1840 Greek Revival home where Theodore Roosevelt's mother, Mittie Bulloch, grew up. She married Theodore Roosevelt Sr. in the dining room in 1853, connecting Roswell directly to presidential history.
