The Story of Alpharetta
Alpharetta was incorporated in 1858, though the area had been settled since the 1830s following the Cherokee removal. The town's name is believed to derive from a Greek word meaning "first." Originally a small agricultural community in Milton County, Alpharetta served as the county seat until Milton County merged with Fulton County in 1932 during the Great Depression.
The transformation began in the 1990s when the extension of GA-400 and the development of corporate campuses along Windward Parkway attracted major technology companies. Today, Alpharetta is home to over 700 tech companies, earning it the title "Technology City of the South." The opening of Avalon in 2014 — a luxury mixed-use development — redefined the city's downtown experience and cemented Alpharetta's identity as a premier live-work-play destination in metro Atlanta.
