The Story of Jonesboro
Jonesboro was established in 1859 as the county seat of Clayton County, named for Samuel G. Jones, a prominent early railroad official. The town's early growth was tied directly to the Macon & Western Railroad, which made it a critical supply point for the Confederacy during the Civil War. The Battle of Jonesborough in August–September 1864 was the decisive engagement that severed Atlanta's last rail supply line, forcing General Hood to evacuate and giving Sherman control of the city.
Jonesboro's connection to Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind runs deep. Mitchell's mother's family lived in Clayton County, and the author drew heavily on local stories, landscapes, and landmarks for her Pulitzer Prize–winning novel. The Stately Oaks Plantation, a preserved antebellum home, and the Road to Tara Museum keep that literary and cultural heritage alive. Today, Jonesboro blends its rich Civil War and literary history with a growing, diverse community anchored by its revitalized downtown square.
