The Story of Kennesaw
Kennesaw was originally called Big Shanty, a railroad construction camp on the Western & Atlantic line in the 1830s. It was here, in 1862, that Union spy James Andrews and his raiders stole the locomotive "The General" in one of the Civil War's most daring episodes — the Great Locomotive Chase. The town was renamed Kennesaw in 1887, taking its name from the nearby mountain, a Cherokee word believed to mean "cemetery" or "burial ground."
The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in June 1864 was one of the bloodiest engagements of the Atlanta Campaign, with thousands of casualties on both sides. The mountain and its surrounding battlefield are now preserved as a National Battlefield Park. In the modern era, Kennesaw has grown from a small railroad town into a thriving Cobb County city, home to Kennesaw State University — one of Georgia's largest public universities — and a vibrant commercial corridor along Barrett Parkway.
