History & Heritage
The Story of Sandy Springs
Long before European settlers arrived, Native Americans — Cherokee and Creek peoples — frequented this area for its natural bubbling springs, which pushed up through clear white sand in a meadow along what is now Sandy Springs Circle. The land was distributed during the Georgia Land Lotteries of 1820–1821. Wilson Spruill purchased the property in 1842, built the area's oldest home (the Austin-Johnson House), and in 1851 donated five acres for the founding of Sandy Springs United Methodist Church near the springs.
The community remained rural until the mid-1950s, when the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 transformed the area. By the 1960s, Interstate 285 and GA-400 connected Sandy Springs to metro Atlanta, sparking a massive housing boom. When Atlanta attempted annexation, residents fought back for nearly 40 years. In June 2005, an overwhelming 94 percent voted for incorporation, and Sandy Springs became Georgia's sixth-largest city on December 1, 2005, with Eva Galambos as its first mayor.
